By working safely and efficiently

By using the protective equipment provided

By reporting incidents that have led or may lead to injury or damage

By adhering to company procedures

By assisting in the investigation of accidents with the objective
of introducing measures to prevent a recurrence.

The allocation of duties for safety matters and the particular arrangements which we will make to implement the policy are set out in the Health and Safety Procedures.

Safeguarding and Vulnerable Adult Policy

Van Hee has developed this policy to provide and maintain safe and healthy conditions for all learners and particularly those classified as Children or Vulnerable Adults. This policy document should be read in conjunction with Van Hee's Health and Safety Policy.

Safeguarding (as defined in the Joint Inspector's Safeguarding Report) is taken to mean 'All agencies working with children, young people and their families take all reasonable measures to ensure that the risk of harm to children's welfare is minimised.'

For Van Hee this relates to 16-18 year olds following Apprenticeship Programmes and 19+ adults who may be vulnerable.

Responsibilities
Responsibility for the implementation of the Safeguarding Policy rests with the Managing Director and the IAG Co-ordinator, who also acts as our Designated Person in relation to Safeguarding.

It is the duty of all employees of Van Hee to follow this policy.

Legislation
This Policy has been informed by various legislation, but most specifically by The Children Act 2004, Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education DfeS 2007.

Definition of Terms
A child is legally defined as anyone under the age of 18.
A vulnerable adult is a person aged 18 or over who has:
A substantial learning or physical disability
A physical or mental illness or mental disorder, chronic or otherwise,
including an addiction to alcohol or drugs, or
A significant reduction in physical or mental capacity.

This policy refers to all children or vulnerable adults regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality or religion.

Recruitment and Selection
Van Hee has a procedure which ensures the recruitment and selection of staff is effective, safe and fair. We look to recruit people with a genuine interest in the welfare and development of our learners. Offers of Employment are made subject to satisfactory references from previous employers and enhanced CRB checks.

Staff Training
All teaching/training staff are given basic training in child protection and safeguarding. Our Designated Person will ensure that she attends external training (including multi-agency training) and will cascade information to other staff as appropriate. Staff are advised of the appropriate guidelines in relation to working with children and vulnerable adults.

Staff are advised of the following in respect of young people/ vulnerable adults:

Any concerns about the welfare of individuals should be raised,
particularly when an individual discloses possible abuse/harm

Staff should share concerns with appropriate staff principally our
   Designated Person

All concerns raised should be treated in confidence
(information shared only on a need to know basis).

Staff are also advised that, to avoid placing themselves in a vulnerable position (and to avoid any possible allegations themselves), they should:

Not spend time in a one to one situation (wherever possible work in the view of other adults)

Not give lifts to or from work/ placements or the training centre

Avoid any personal contact outside of work.

Liaison with Partner Organisations
All partner organisations have a duty of care for their learners and we will assist them in implementing their Safeguarding procedures, in particular sharing any concerns about the welfare of individuals.

We will agree and implement workable attendance, reporting, monitoring and emergency procedures in partnership with the child/vulnerable primary contract learning provider. Where requested, we will supply to the primary contract learning provider copies of CRB checks for our staff.

Any plans to offer any off-site curricular or extra-curricular activities will be referred to the primary contract learning provider for formal consideration of whether there is any increased risk to the health, safety and welfare of their learners, staff or others who may be involved. This includes potential PR activities which could involve learners.

We will evaluate and review on an annual basis the effectiveness of the arrangements that are in place for work-related learning opportunities and work experience placements.
